A Fun Way to Learn English Vocabulary & Help Feed the Hungry
Freerice Game by The UN’s World Food Programme
Need something to do in your spare time? Why not play an online game that improves your English while providing for the greater good? Play Freerice ((Freerice.com)!
Freerice.com is an online English vocabulary (and more) game that helps feed the hungry through the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP), the leading humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide. Here at The English Quiz, we’ve been a longtime supporter of Freerice and have written about the game in the past, but we wanted to provide some updated information.
Freerice has created a special “Lockdown Challenge” and is asking participants to do their part in spreading positivity during this time. Here’s how to participate:
- 1️⃣ Log in to freerice.com
- 2️⃣ Go to Groups
- 3️⃣ Use the code: UnitedWeEat to join the Freerice Lockdown Challenge
- 4️⃣ Start playing
- 5️⃣ Challenge 3 friends to join too!
The game is completely free and is adapted to children and adults. To play, you are asked multiple choice questions. If you answer correctly, advertisements appear on your screen. When you see one of these ads, enough money to buy 10 grains of rice is donated to WFP to support its work. So, by playing, you are generating the money that pays for this rice. 100% of all funds generated on Freerice go to the World Food Programme, Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.
In the recently updated version, players can choose from various categories including a new Coronavirus category that helps players understand Covid-19 related English vocabulary: https://freerice.com/categories/covid-19. Other categories available include global goals (climate action or healthy eating), general English vocabulary or grammar, geography, humanities, math and sciences. In addition, Freerice.com has expanded and now includes 6 European languages.
Did you know?Freerice is a huge contributor to WFP’s #zerohunger program.
Players can also choose their difficulty level - 5 different levels from easiest to hardest - and playing in groups is also available. By playing, you will learn new words and enhance your knowledge, but most importantly you generate the funds that feed the hungry. You can play Freerice anonymously, or create an individual or group account to track your donations. Freerice has 600,000 users per month and has generated 202 billion grains of rice since going live.
Here at The English Quiz, we are interested in not only promoting the English language but giving back to those in need. We’re pleased to link to Freerice from our website and encourage as many people as possible to play the game.
Support Freerice by playing here, or by downloading their new iphone app, Android app on Google Play, or play on social media through Facebook or Instagram.
